1 Simple Trick to Breaking a Bad Habit for Life

by Suzanne Hiscock

If you have a hard time breaking a bad habit, try this: Find one small habit you can change and make a commitment to yourself to change it for 5 days.

That’s it!  One little habit, for only 5 days.

Tell yourself it’s just an experiment and you can go back to the original habit if it doesn’t work out.  An example might be replacing an unhealthy breakfast with a healthier one, or buying a regular coffee instead of calorie-rich fancy coffee, or choosing stairs instead of elevators/escalators. Chances are after 5 days you’ll break the bad habit and replace it with this new, healthier habit.  If it’s a particularly hard habit to break, you may need a few extra days.

See, the thing is, we fear change.  We like to stay within our comfort zone.  But without change, we’re like a stagnant pool of water.

And when it comes to eating and exercise habits huge changes can be overwhelming.

5 days isn’t a long time.  It’s something you can commit to, right?  What small change can you make in your life for the next 5 days?

And she’s really TRULY SORRY ABOUT THAT. You see, she didn’t realize she was contributing to diet culture; she just wanted to help people feel better. But losing weight isn’t the way to do it. She’s on a mission to change all that with an anti-diet approach. So, pardon the dust on the floor as the website gets revamped.
